Bradford Salem 36 Barnsley 13
Bradford Salem progressed into the second round of the Yorkshire Shield after a fine victory over Barnsley at Shay Lane.
The visitors dominated possession in the opening 5 minutes and only resolute defence from the Bradford side kept their opponents at bay. Then with virtually their first touch of the ball, the Salem backs ran the ball from deep inside their own half and swift handling created sufficient space for flying winger Chris Savva to dive in at the corner.
Fly half Jonny Robinson was unable to land the difficult conversation but soon made amends with a try under the posts which this time he improved to give his side a 12-3 advantage. The lead, however, was soon cut to 6 points after Salem conceded a second penalty.
The Heaton side then hit a purple patch and 2 excellent breaks from veteran centre Steve McManus were supported firstly by fellow cente Sean Thomas and then by scrum half Dave Howcroft and both strolled over beneath the sticks. Robinson landed the simple conversions followed by a penalty to give a half time scoreline of 29-6.
The second half was marred by a serious and worrying injury to Sean Thomas who was knocked unconscious in a tackle and swallowed his tongue. Thankfully, Barnsley's team contained a GP and a paramedic and their swift actions helped to prevent what could have been a life threatening situation. Nevertheless, the game was stopped for 20 minutes whilst an ambulance arrived at the scene.
Not surprisingly, both sides were subdued on the restart and perhaps fittingly honours were even for the remainder of the game with Barnsley scoring a well worked try to cancel out Robinson's second effort which he converted to give a final scoreline of 36-13.
Salem were later relieved to learn that Thomas had been released from hospital on Sunday morning.
